Networks

A network is created when more than one computer is connected to another and/or to a device which can be shared with other computers. A simple network might be two computers sharing the same printer.

These devices may be connected using wires, or using a wireless connection. In this case, each device must have a component capable of sending and receiving wireless signals.

A classroom network is created when multiple computers and printers are connected in a single room. This can range from 2 or 3 to many stations.

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers within a small geographic area, such as a building. The connections, either wired or wireless, eventually go to a central "server" where the commands are processed, and data is sent on to its destination.

A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects computers within a large metropolitan area.

The internet is the largest computer network in the world. It consists of thousands of connected networks around the world. Each government, company and organization on the Internet is responsible for maintaining its own network.

Many organizations have established collections of materials for use by teachers and students around the world. These materials are updated regularly, and frequently correspond with current events and issues.

Use caution when considering the use of materials you find on the Internet. Materials submitted, or "uploaded" by individuals may contain errors in content or composition. Materials obtained from most of the major educational sites are reliable. For example, the materials at Marco Polo have been reviewed by professional prior to being made available on their web site.

An intranet is a small version of the Internet inside a specific location, school division, company, or similar organization. An intranet is a very efficient and inexpensive way to make internal documents available to members of that particular group. Many organizations use intranets to distribute information such as phone directories, schedules, professional development and appropriate resources. VWC maintains an intranet for students, staff and faculty
