Digital Storytelling

According to the Center for Digital Storytelling, a digital story (dig·i·tal sto·ry) is a short, first-person video-narrative created by combining recorded voice, still and moving images, and music or other sounds.

In essence, digital storytelling is the art of telling a story with a combination of text, images, sounds and video. Engaging students with technology tools that are available for their use can enhance their understanding of content by deepening their research and understanding, collaboration and creativity. Digital Storytelling has at its core, the need for well-developed writing skills. By assigning projects in which students must plan out a story, you can encourage them to peer-review the written ideas of others, helping each to become a better communicator.

The use of Digital Storytelling in the classroom can reinforce all of the NETS - S (National Educational Technology Standards for Students) including:

1. Creativity and Innovation

2. Communication and Collaboration

3. Research and Information Fluency

4. Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving and Decision Making

5. Digital Citizenship

6. Technology Operations and Concepts
