Online Tools for Digital Story Telling

Students can use online resources to generate stories using the picture libraries and characters available through the site, or they may choose to use a computer program that affords them greater flexibility in their production. Keep in mind that these programs will also require a greater commitment of time, so consider that as you integrate digital storytelling in your classroom. Let's take a quick look at two online tools that you might consider using.

Kerpoof

Kerpoof is an easy to use website that will allow students to create their own digital stories, drawings, cards, and movies. As a teacher you can set up accounts for your students...but for our class, you will not be required to create a teacher account.

Be sure to sign up for an account. The system will assume you are a student right now, and will send an email to "your Parent" seeking approval. Be sure you use your OWN email address and agree to the terms when you receive the email. If not, you will be unable to save your work.

Be sure to read through the handout "Kerpoof Hints.doc which has been uploaded to course documents.

Take a few minutes to preview this You Tube Video on Kerpoof.

Basic Steps:

1. Login to Kerpoof

2. Create a story and save it (It actually saves to the Kerpoof website.) You can not add a text box to include your name because of the safety issues regarding the internet...but when you email the story, you can add your name.

3. To see your story, click on the link to Currently Popular and choose My Creations.

4. Click on the pencil tool to revise your story.

5. When you save the story, be sure to give it a name. (You can not save the story unless you have provided "Parental Consent," so make sure you respond to that email!

6. Click on the jpeg icon to save the page as a graphic. This can then be inserted into a Word document for submission in class.

StoryCreator2

Story Creator 2 lets you create stories using simple drag and drop onscreen elements, characters and scenes. The ?Story Creator? comes with lots of backgrounds, characters and props and you can even add your own pictures.

When you sign up for an account, please use a login name that I will recognize as your name, e.g. pterry. When you finish your story, you will need to select Virginia Wesleyan in order to save your work

Story Creator 2 will allow you to create original or revised versions of myths and legends, and as a result you'll find images and scenes that relate to famous myths and legends you already know.

Basic Steps:

1. Go to Story Creator 2.

2. Use the settings, characters, props and speech bubbles to create a story and save it.

3. You can add additional pages and chapters. Use the Copy features to make a duplicate of the previous page.

4. The first time you create a story, you'll be asked to Join StoryCreator2 when you click on the Save button. Create a user name that resembles your real name and choose your own password. Make sure that you remember this information so that you can use it later.

5. Review and revise your story as necessary and then select Submit when you are ready to turn it in for grading.
