Online Quizzes

Whereas teachers typically use tests as a form of summative assessment, quizzes are generally used as formative assessment instruments, checking understanding periodically throughout a unit of instruction. These assessments allow teachers to quickly and easily ascertain if students are understanding content before proceeding on to more complex material. Printed quizzes may be produced and duplicated for students, or online quizzes can be developed. Online quizzes can be used from school or home to review material quickly and easily. Students, parents and teachers can see the results of online quizzes immediately, and can take steps to remedy any misunderstanding related to the lesson objectives.

Most online quiz generators include at least 4 components:

  • an authoring component for use by the faculty member in preparing quizzes
  • a delivery component for actually administering quizzes
  • a grading component for mechanically scoring the quiz, reporting the results either to the student or to the instructor
  • a security/admin component for controlling who can take the quiz, etc.

Most online quiz generators store test information and student data.

QuizLab and QuizStar each have a nominal annual fee
