E-Mail Research How-To

Note: There are a number of different ways in which this assignment could be completed.  This document attempts to describe one of them.

1.  Start one browser, then another by holding down the Crtl key and momentarily striking the "N" key on the keyboard. (The first browser window will be used to perform the research - enter search engine URL e.g. altavista.com - and the second will be used to log into your Yahoo Web-based mail account – enter mail.yahoo.com and log in.)

2.  Write down exactly what it is that you want to find so that you can refer to it as you compose your search in the next step.

3.  Switch to the browser window (Alt + Tab-momentarily or click on the application's button in the task bar at the bottom of the screen) where you have the search engine up and begin to research by entering the appropriate search syntax.  (You will need to have read the search engine's help file or page to learn which operators to use with your search engine.)  Visit the "hits" that look good to you after reading the short descriptions that are returned.  When you find the information that satisfies what you specified in number two above.

4.  When you have found your information - BOOKMARK IT! - Now hold down the Crtl key and momentarily strike the "A" key on the keyboard to select all text.  Now select Edit | Copy from the menu items.  You have just copied the full text of the Web page to the Windows clipboard.  Yes, I know that you cannot see it, but don't worry.  It's there.

5.  While you are still in the window of the site that you found above, right-click on an image and select Save Image As from the context menu.  Point the Save As operation at Floppy a: and note the name and type (.jpg, .gif or .png) of the graphic file.  Select the Save button.

6.  Switch to the browser window (Alt + Tab - momentarily or click on the  application's button in the task bar at the bottom of the screen) where you have Yahoo Mail active and click Compose on the left-hand column toward the top of the screen.  Fill in my e-mail address in the To: field (tspencer@whro.net)

7.  In the subject line type your name followed by your class number and the words e-mail research.

8.  In the main body of the e-mail message (large white box) fill in the information as specified at http://members.whro.net/~tspencer/search.html

9.  Finally attach your graphic to the message by selecting Edit/Delete Attachments just below the bottom of the large text box that you have been typing in.  Carefully follow the directions as presented on screen to attach the graphic.  You will need to change the default file type which is .html to All Files. You should see the name of the graphic which you just attached in the text box just beneath the message labeled Attachments.

10.  Press Send.  Man… You are good!
