Spreadsheet FAQ

What are spreadsheets really?
Spreadsheets are a software programs (tools) that are used to organize information in a grid format – they then allow calculations to be performed using special mathematical operators and functions.
What can you do with spreadsheets?
Organizing Information
Spreadsheets are a very efficient tool to use as an organizer - to make custom tables that have categories of information about a group of subjects.
Performing Calculations
They are most adept at both organizing information and performing mathematical calculations on that information – such as setting up and calculating grades in a grade book. Another example of spreadsheet use would be to set up a budget at home.
Graphing / Tallying Information
They are very good at generating graphs based on numerical data. We can ask the class what kinds of pets that they have at home – then immediately graph this tally for the entire group to see and immediately understand if dogs, cats, or fish are the most popular pets.
Database Application
They can be used as a substitute for a database application when needed. They can also export data to a database or import data from a database. This avoids the tedious task of re-entering data – Yea!
Data Analysis
You can take data that you find on the Internet and plug it directly into your spreadsheet – and analyze the information.
Automation
Spreadsheets allow automation – you can set them up to give a quiz, mark answers that are correct / incorrect (giving students immediate feedback), award points and grade performance automatically.
No way! You can do this. Many tasks mentioned above require no math whatsoever to perform – and the spreadsheet makes these tasks easy and fun. Any type of math that you know how to do can be done by you in a spreadsheet and made much easier (especially if it's repetitive.) Some tasks will require special knowledge (such as automation) but that's why you are here. We are allowed to look things up!
What if I choose not to use the spreadsheet – because I think it's too hard for me?
Then you lose. Several tasks that we all perform are made easier by spreadsheets. To fail to use the spreadsheet means you are going to work harder to get the same job done. Doesn't make much sense does it?
