Enabling Skills to Prepare Teachers to Effectively Support Student Achievement of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Computers and Technology

1. Use of a variety of computer input/output devices and peripherals
2. Store, organize, & retrieve software programs & data files on a variety of storage devices
3. Navigate different types of software programs including instructional, productivity, & courseware
4. Troubleshoot general hardware and software problems
5. Apply functional knowledge of basic computer components, e.g. operating, application, & utility software; permanent and removable storage (main memory, hard drive); monitor; scanner & digital camera; matrix, inkjet, and laser printers
6. Apply functional knowledge of various technology tools, e.g., video records and players, optical disc players, computer presentation devices, multimedia computer workstation
7. Use software tools to assist with classroom administrative tasks
8. Use software tools to design, customize, or individualize instructional materials
9. Use telecommunications software to collaborate and find resources
10. Use local and worldwide telecommunications
11. Use search strategies to retrieve electronic information
12. Understand types, characteristics, sources, and use of effective instructional software and other technology-based learning resources
13. Use tools of technology including, but not limited to, computers, modems, networks, printers, large group presentation devices, scanners, digital cameras, camcorders, video cassette recorders, optical disc players, etc.
14. Incorporate telecommunications as a component of instruction
15. Incorporate word processing, spreadsheet, or database software in instruction
16. Use a presentation and/or authoring program to present a lesson or develop instructional materials
17. Utilize technology to facilitate assessment & student-centered instruction as determined by the discipline and/or grade level taught
18. Use multi-media, hypermedia, & telecommunications software to support individual & group instruction
19. As teaching assignments dictate, utilize & understand resources available concerning adaptive technology
20. Use technology effectively in various educational settings, e.g., one computer in a classroom, class-size computer lab, computers in classroom clusters or mini labs, multimedia computer workstations, etc.
21. Effectively utilize an automated library media center
22. Abide by copyright laws, practice responsible uses of technology
